Our tale begins in a squat, square building with few distinguishing features. If you drove past it, you wouldn’t even notice it. Yet, within this building operates the most important, life-protecting team in the Town of Blacksburg. And at the center of that team is Martha. Though she exudes a quiet calm, Martha, the Customer Service Manager, acts as the essential nervous system of the operation.
You may be surprised, then, to discover that Martha is a cyborg: human, yes, but enhanced by mechanical elements. She enjoys her morning bagel and schmear as much as the next person, but she also cherishes her unique mechanical qualities. With connections to her town’s data, Martha possesses just the right combination of human and machine to empower her to be the hero her community needs. Believe it or not, her cyborg enhancements, advanced meter infrastructure, and meter data management software, are only extensions of who Martha is and what she is already capable of doing.
By day, Martha scans the flow meter data collected each minute from all the water meters connected to the advanced meter infrastructure. The meter data management software highlights any odd usage patterns within the tens of thousands of meters in her community, so Martha can instantly tell what’s an emergency and what can wait. By night, though, Martha is a regular mom. She makes dinner with her husband and grows frustrated with her teenager’s attitude and constant phone use.
She may be one of a kind, but luckily, there are hundreds of enhanced Marthas across the country today. In a couple of years, there will be thousands. It’s a good thing, too, because when the public needs help, they call Martha. She’s always plugged in — always knows the root of the problem and the solution. In a crisis, Martha meets with the team of heroes and dispatches them to the scene. Then she sits back and smiles because she knows she can trust the team to handle it.
