EVERYTHING IS A NAIL WHEN YOU’RE A HAMMER
Ever tried to drive a screw with a hammer? It’s not an inspired solution. The only reason it might even seem reasonable is that it’s the only tool you have, and the screw kind of looks like a nail, so it needs to be struck. But the inspired problem solver packs a hammer, screwdriver, and wrench.
Several North American water utility leaders similarly inspired our product management team to expand our Allegro AMI solution portfolio to address the unique conditions found within each of their cities. They told us they wanted a choice – they needed something more from their vendor than just a hammer. Densely populated areas, widespread rural landscapes, prohibitive city code limiting infrastructure, and spotty cell service areas all can present constraints to an AMI implementation that’s focused around a single communication technology. Often, these different considerations are found in the same city. Nevertheless, consultants and tech providers commonly drive their preferred (or often their only) AMI technology, whether or not it’s optimal, most efficient, or cost-effective.
Allegro Licensed + Allegro Cellular + Allegro IoT
Those who bake know that one achieves the best outcomes when you’re able to select the optimal cake pan for the job, whether springform, sheet, traditional, bundt, or a cake ring. The same applies to creating the optimal AMI solution for your utility. Our inspired set of Allegro AMI solutions when fully released this year offers a mixed toolbox of radio technologies to deliver the most appropriate communication answer to every nuanced concern. Allegro AMI is built around our patented, flexible, universal Interpreter register design that can retrofit any meter, anywhere, or come pre-installed and integrated on new water meters.
INSPIRED TO REIMAGINE THE MODERN UTILITY
Smart Water is all about industry-wide digital transformation to create today’s modern water utility. We are in a golden age of reimagination. And it’s exhilarating. Close your eyes and be inspired not just to imagine solving your most pressing immediate challenges but ask what tomorrow’s promised land could like for your utility. There is no shortage of stunning technology available today, from state-of-the-art water measurement to unparalleled treatment and filtration solutions, to AI-driven tech like utility Digital Twins. Imagine the ultimate in utility performance, efficiency, and customer service experience – the technology to meet that vision is here, now.
INSPIRED TO PREDICT AND INFORM
Our Harmony Meter Data Management solution didn’t just get a recent facelift. In Harmony Encore, we completely reimagined our software with faster performance, a refined, more intuitive user experience, and improved functionality. In addition, we’ve partnered with GoAigua – a global leader in analytics and digital transformation to deliver a brilliant, fully integrated, seamless data solution featuring predictive AI capabilities all within our prize-winning MDM software Harmony Encore. We developed Harmony Encore in collaboration with several North American utilities’ input and ideas.
This partnered approach with utilities is also why we’re incredibly excited to collaborate with GoAigua – because they began their journey first as a water utility. Spain’s Global Omnium utility in Valencia manages 400 municipalities throughout the country and serves nearly 4 million customers. GoAigua is a former unit of Global Omnium, spun off as an independent company focused on water management tech after being at the center of the utility’s digital transformation for 15+ years. We believe the best technologies and solutions are from ideas generated directly by the customers we serve – water utilities.
INSPIRED TO HELP PEOPLE BUILD THE FUTURE
It’s a truly incredible time in our industry. It’s rich in fresh ideas, advanced technology, innovative software, entrepreneurial passion, and the noble cause of sustainability and resilience. This dynamic evolution in our industry inspires youth to play an active role and become future leaders in our sector. So be inspired to discuss water in your community, speak at your kid’s schools, and encourage young talented minds to be a part of the water industry and help shape the solutions to address the challenges of tomorrow.
INSPIRED TO KEEP LEARNING
Few too people are aware of MOOCs. Huh? What’s a MOOC? Exactly! These are “Massive Open Online Courses.” I first learned about MOOCs from my kids through online programs like Coursera and EdX. They offer phenomenal opportunities to learn something new, typically at either no cost (auditing the course) or very low cost ($79 – $200). The best part is that they have classes from Stanford, Wharton, University of Chicago’s Booth Business School, Rice, and many notable international institutions. Writing this blog inspired me to see if there are any classes about water. There are plenty. I’ve noted a few below.
- Introduction to Sustainability – the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign
- International Water Law – University of Geneva
- Water Resources Management and Policy – University of Geneva
- Analysis and Design of Water Distribution Systems – Purdue University
- Design of Urban Water Management Structures – Purdue University
- Global Water Use and Climate Change – Queen’s University (Canada)
- Water in the Western United States – University of Colorado Boulder
